The house is at 1677 Round Top Road, also known as state Route 96. It is a quarter-mile from the Massachusetts state line at Uxbridge. It is a 26.2-mile drive from downtown Providence and 60 miles from Boston. The house shown in the movie is actually located in North Carolina and has three floors, lots of windows and a two-story columned porch. The Burrillville farmhouse house was built in the 1730s, with parts of it having a second floor.
A fictionalized version of Sherman served as the main antagonist in The Conjuring. It was decided to create a new class of office building, one that could be built cheaply with the "speed of a warehouse," and could be used by any agency needing space. This new class of building would be called the "General Federal Office Building" and was frequently described in the press as "utilitarian."

Preliminary designs for a new House office building were prepared in 1925 by a local firm known as "The Allied Architects of Washington (Inc.)." The principal architects were Frank Upman, Gilbert LaCoste Rodier, Nathan C. Wyeth and Louis Justemente.

The building also housed five large committee rooms, seven small committee rooms, and a large assembly room, all with marble baseboards, ornamental crown molding and lighting fixtures, and bronze clocks.
